CULTIVATING A VISION FOR GROWTH

March 13-14, 2025 – SkillSource recently hosted its bi-annual board retreat at Campbell’s Resort in beautiful Chelan, WA. Board members traveled from across North Central Washington, some from as far as three hours away, to attend this rare in-person event. The retreat provided a valuable opportunity for board members to connect, collaborate, and strategize on how to drive a stronger workforce for the region.

The retreat kicked off with a dinner at Tsillan Cellars, followed by an engaging and competitive game of  workforce jeopardy led by SkillSource CEO Lisa Romine and Program Manager Aaron Parrott. In a word, it was a hoot! This fun activity helped board members better understand everything from the meaning behind all the acronyms to critical trivia such as how many square miles is covered in the SkillSource service area. (psst … it’s 15,000!)

The following day was filled with interactive presentations. Communications Manager Kelli Martinelli started the day with an icebreaker that encouraged board members to connect with those outside of their sub-areas (Chelan-Douglas, Grant-Adams, and Okanogan). Participants were given sealed cards with discussion prompts and a pack of seeds, symbolizing potential and growth.

Stu Freed delivered an interactive presentation on high-performing boards, focusing on creating a vision that aligns with stakeholder needs. In the afternoon, Gene Sharratt provided an inspiring presentation on skills-based learning and hiring, helping board members understand the various headwinds and tailwinds the workforce system will face in the coming years. Other members of the SkillSource leadership team facilitated small group discussions with the board, crafting visions for the future. The retreat concluded with a quarterly board meeting and a group photo on the historic Woodin Avenue Bridge.

The retreat fostered connections among board members, allowing them to share insights about their respective industries and organizations. It also provided opportunities to discuss how they can collectively contribute to strengthening North Central Washington’s workforce.

Special thanks to Campbell’s Resort, particularly Kari Keegan, SkillSource staff member Sue Coe, Tsillan Cellars, and all who contributed to the retreat’s success.
